A chasm is growing between our rapidly rising goals for our educational systems and what schools can routinely accomplish. The chasm is widest for our most underprivileged schools and students. This is one of the greatest social justice issues of our time. It is clear that education needs a new improvement paradigm – one that recognizes the complexity of the work of education and the wide variability in outcomes that our systems currently produce. In this talk, Anthony S. Bryk will sketch out such a paradigm. It joins together the discipline of improvement science with the power of structured networked communities to accelerate learning to improve. These communities combine analytic thinking and systematic methods to develop and test changes, and they develop practicebased evidence as an essential complement to findings from other forms of educational research. Anthony S. Bryk is one of America’s most noted educational researchers. He is the President of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and a member of the National Academy of Education and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2010 Bryk was appointed by President Obama to the National Board for Education Sciences. Introduced by Per Kornhall, independent expert and author.
